Finding out you're pregnant is such an exciting time! But let’s be real, the first trimester can be rough. I don’t remember feeling like this with my last two pregnancies and maybe it is because I have two kids that I am chasing around. The fatigue is constant and morning sickness seems to be every morning and late afternoon, and emotions are all over the place. Everything seems to be go-go-go and there are not enough hours in the day! But one thing you can control is your self-care regimen. It is so nice to spend those 5-10 minutes you have in the morning and before bed alone to get yourself together and use good, clean beauty products that you know are not harmful to your baby.
Let’s be clear, everything at VERT Beauty is safe for you to use at any point in your life. But there are products that you do want to avoid such as Retinol (even the most gentle), Salicylic and Glycolic Acid, and certain essential oils can be too much. During the first trimester, I can’t use anything with too much scent. Even some botanical-nutty scents are just too much for me. My skin is extremely dry and I feel like I need a little more nourishment during this time. Below are the products that have helped me get through the first 14 weeks of my pregnancy.
Cleanser: Josh Rosebrook Complete Moisture Cleanse - Am and Pm. This pH-balanced cleanser has a creamy texture and a light, fresh scent that makes it a pleasure to use. It helps calm and renews sensitive skin while preserving the skin’s protective acid mantle barrier. Great for all skin types. Tip: at night, after applying the cleanser, I press a warm washcloth on my skin to remove the cleanser. Not only does it feel great on the skin but it allows you to wipe away eye makeup that may be difficult to remove.
Exfoliator: May Lindstrom The Clean Dirt - I use this as a morning cleanser 2x a week. Infused with exotic warming spices and purifying minerals, this magic powder cleanser refines, smooths, and transforms skin with a potent cocktail of exfoliants. Tip: Mix a capful in the palm of your hand with a tiny bit of water, mix into a frothy lather and apply. Leave on for a bit and let it work its magic. It will tingle, but it’s a good tingle.
Elixir: Laurel Hydrating Elixir I - Am and Pm. This Elixir is incredibly rich in polysaccharides, B vitamins, enzymes, bioflavonoids, polyphenols, resveratrol, vitamin C, and plant humectants that mimic hyaluronic acid. It smells herbaceous but not too overwhelming. Tip: Spritz on your face after cleansing and apply your serum directly after while the skin is still damp. I also use it during the day if I need a pick-me-up.
Face Serum: Marie Veronique Vitamin C+E+Ferulic Serum - Am and Pm. This serum is a safe alternative to Retinol during pregnancy. It is loaded with powerful ingredients; Vitamin C is suspended in an anhydrous solution for maximum potency, as well as ferulic acid—a super plant antioxidant—plus CoQ10, astaxanthin, vitamin E, and green tea. This serum will treat the skin with a host of antioxidants to prevent free-radical damage and to help brighten your skin.
Eye Treatment: Odacite Ba+S | Eye Contour (Baobab Sarsaparilla Serum Concentrate With Rollerball) - Am and Pm. Rich in vitamins A, E & F and plant sterols, the Baobab oil targets all visible signs of aging around the fragile eye area, helping to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. I love this little rollerball because it feels good on the skin as you gently massage the rollerball around the eye area, it acts as a cooling effect helping with puffiness and dark circles. Tip: You can do it throughout the day too on top of makeup if you need to look more awake.
Face Balm: Laurel Day Balm - AM. This gorgeous Calendula colored facial balm is loaded with antioxidant-rich botanicals, creating a barrier of defense against free radical damage, and keeps skin soft and seals in hydration and moisture throughout the day. This has always been a favorite of mine and I can’t get enough of it. I apply this directly on top of my serum and it seems to do the trick. If you feel like you need a little more, the Laurel Night Balm is wonderful too.
Ps. Coming in for an organic facial is the best thing you can for your skin to get it balanced and to enjoy some ME time. Our Estheticians will recommend specific products for you and you will leave feeling relaxed and hydrated.
