As Earth Day approaches, we’re thinking about ways to reduce our footprint and rethink our relationship to repurposing and recycling.
Have you ever wondered where your empty product containers go when you toss them? Unfortunately, just because something has a recycling symbol on it doesn’t guarantee it actually gets recycled—and most personal care and beauty products are classified as hazardous waste! Thankfully, the beauty industry is innovating its sustainability practices, including packaging choices.
That’s where we come in: At Vert Beauty, we want to make it easier for everyone to recycle their beauty packaging so that we can leave the Earth (and its resources) better than we found it, and we’re proud to be partnering with TerraCycle to host a Zero Waste Box to make recycling and repurposing a no-brainer.
With the Zero Waste Box, you can recycle any brand of cosmetic, haircare, and skincare packaging. We accept all beauty products—even products not purchased from Vert Beauty. To recycle your items, make sure they're empty, clean, and free of product residue, and look for the tall brown and green Terracycle Box next to our register.
For every full size empty you bring in, we’ll give you 10 reward points (max 10 per visit, or 100 points).
Here’s what you can recycle:
- Shampoo bottles and caps
- Conditioner bottles and caps
- Hair gel tubes and caps
- Spray bottles and triggers
- Hair paste plastic jars and caps
- Lip balm tubes
- Face soap dispensers and tubes
- Lotion bottles, tubes, dispensers, and jars
- Shaving foam tubes (no cans)
- Lip gloss tubes
- Mascara tubes
- Eyeliner pencils and cases
- Eyeshadow tubes
- Concealer tubes and sticks
A few things you can’t bring in: aerosol cans, perfume bottles, nail polish bottles, and nail polish remover bottles, electronic items (such as blow dryers and straighteners), any bio-medical or bio-hazardous waste or any contents of packaging such as nail-polish, lotion, soap, or ointments.
How the repurpose process works: TerraCycle recycles over 97% of the waste it collects, and reuses or up-cycles the rest. After TerraCycle receives the collected waste, the material is consolidated into large volumes before it is shredded and sorted by material type. From there, it’s cleaned, melted, and recycled into a wide range of new plastic products, such as park benches and picnic tables. Metals, too, are separated using a system of magnets and smelted to create raw material for reuse as a base material for stamped product applications like nuts and bolts, washers, and rings. Glass is cleaned and sorted by color for processing, where it is crushed and melted to be used in new glass products or other applications.
Using a Zero Waste Box is just the beginning. Even our small, individual actions can add up to major shifts in the right direction. At Vert, we love Earth 911 for local recycling guides and Wands for Wildlife to recycle old mascara wands; you can also find helpful resources through your Department of Environmental Protection for state-specific action and programs. Thank you for joining Team Vert in being proactive about our planet’s health and future!
