OKAY, WHAT IS IT?
Collagen is a protein made from amino acids: glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine. It’s one of the most abundant (and important!) structural proteins found in our body, and makes up the connective tissues found in our bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments—AKA, it’s responsible for our skin’s strength, resilience, and elasticity. We produce A LOT of it when we’re young, and production begins to decrease by the time we reach our mid-20s.
PLANT VERSUS ANIMAL
In the last five years, it’s been popularized as an ingestible and infused in skincare—and traditionally, this collagen is derived from animal sources. Now, we’re seeing innovation around the replacement of animal-derived collagen with genetically engineered, plant-based, vegan collagen: that means environmentally-friendly formulas produced without harm to animals, with the same plumping, humectant effect as the real deal.
In addition to the many wonderful products utilizing the benefits of vegan collagen, there are other ways we can help boost and preserve the collagen in our own bodies. Sun, for example, is especially damaging to collagen and its production—and you know we always, always recommend wearing a clean SPF. Fresh foods like avocado, coconut, dark green veggies, and fruits rich in vitamin C (hellooo, citrus!) are major collagen boosters; so is a regular habit of water intake.
WHAT WE LOVE
Amanda, Vert co-founder, rotates a few collagen-boosting products she loves: “I just love that there are so many WAYS to boost collagen, and benefit from it in products. Moon Juice makes an amazing vegan collagen creamer derived from mushrooms and rice bran. Fitglow’s Cloud Collagen Oil is super transformative and hydrating—it uses lupin seed and apple extract to promote collagen production and visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Fitglow also has a Night Lip Serum that improves cell structure and volume in the lips. I’m a big fan of Herbivore Botanicals, too—their Cloud Jelly Pink Plumping Hydration Serum really plumps and helps skin bounce back from bouts of dryness and dehydration.”
