Every month, we’ll talk about individual skincare ingredients, the hardworking heroes of our most beloved formulations and rituals. This month, we’ll spotlight super-plumping skin-saver: hyaluronic acid!
All About that Bounce
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar found naturally in our skin (much like collagen and elastin!) that binds to water and works to keep skin hydrated, healthy, and plump—think that dewy, glowy effect we can experience in places with high humidity, or your skin after a facial steam. It’s bouncy, if you will. It’s fresh. Changes in season, winter heat on overdrive, and harsh skin treatments can all impact our protective skin barriers, allowing that well of moisture to escape.
Another thing collagen and elastin have in common with hyaluronic acid: the amount of naturally-occurring hyaluronic acid in our bodies decreases as we get older. There are myriad ways to stimulate its production, however—that includes folding antioxidant-rich foods into your meal prep and integrating its topical delivery into your daily skincare routine.
Rules of Attraction
Humectant, hydration-attracting hyaluronic acid brings moisture to the surface of your skin when formulated in toners, mists, creams, and serums. If, for example, it’s a superstar ingredient of your everyday moisturizer, it will work to keep skin moisturized throughout the day, improve skin elasticity, and impart a youthful luminosity. That sounds lovely, if you ask us.
Since it’s such a moisture powerhouse, you can start by including it in one product in your routine. Even better, it plays well with others: think of it as a soothing, reparative ingredient in conjunction with your enzyme peels, retinol, and fruit acids.
What We Love
“I immediately think of Tata Harper,” says Amanda Hume, Vert co-founder. “The Hydrating Floral Mask is just beautiful—is has multiple “sizes” of HA, aka, it’s a hydration superhero—and her moisturizers, from the Tata Harper Repairative Moisturizer to the Fortifying Moisturizer, are formulated with incredibly potent levels of hyaluronic acid. There are so many deeply effective options in the shop for someone who wants to include it in their daily ritual: Osea Hyaluronic Sea Serum, Indie Lee Superfruit Facial Cream, Josh Rosebrook Hydration Boost Concentrate Serum, Kosas Wet Oil Lipgloss…the list goes on. I always encourage clients and regulars at the store to be curious when they come in—to read ingredient lists and see what they gravitate towards, maybe what their skin most needs in the present moment.”
