At the shop, we’re always fielding questions about where to start with a skincare routine. With Father’s Day right around the corner—it’s Sunday, June 20th, people!—it’s a good time for a refresh on men’s skincare routines and gender-neutral, must-have basics for gifting and appreciating the dad in your life.
WHY SKINCARE ISN’T ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL
Skincare is personal! There are similarities in men and women’s skin, but men tend to have thicker (higher collagen content, jealous), oilier skin, innate moisture, and denser hair growth. It used to be that men’s skincare was limited to bar soaps and beard oils—AKA, “masculine” products. Thankfully, lines have evolved to be both gender-neutral and more expansive to meet the needs of all skin types.
WHAT’S IN A GOOD ROUTINE?
It’s pretty easy—we always recommend a cleanser, a toner or tonic, and hydration with SPF protection. That can branch out to shampoo, conditioner, and a nighttime oil, cream, or serum.
OUR HANDS DOWN, GOTTA HAVE ‘EM FAVORITES FOR MEN
Leave it to Vert co-founder Bryan Hume to come through with his shortlist of tried-and-tested essentials for men: if you’re gifting for Father’s Day—or any day!—he’s got you covered from creating small daily rituals to more robust skincare routines. Below, you’ll find a full range of our faves, from Bryan’s go-to facial cleanser to creamy shampoo bars.
Some like a bar, some like a gel, we love both for their refreshing, nourishing qualities—Odacite’s Black Mint Cleanser is a deep-cleanse for combination, oily, or acne-prone skin, and leaves skin clear, invigorated and mattified using a formulation blend of clarifying, detoxing activated charcoal and rhassoul clay, astringent peppermint and tea tree oils, and gentle apple amino acid; Osmia Organics’ Black Clay Facial Soap is made with black Australian clay and Dead Sea mud to balance and tone the skin, organic almond, avocado, and castor bean oils to condition, and coconut milk for a beautiful, cloud-like lather—safe to use for sensitive and dermatitis-prone skin, and a super-soothing daily routine.
Hydrating, calming, balancing purifying—toning is a super quick ticket to delivering nutrients to the skin barrier before heavier creams or SPFs are applied, and just as good as a quick refresher throughout the day. Josh Rosebrook’s Hydrating Accelerator is your multi-action hydrator, toner, and light moisturizer all-in-one; Indie Lee’s CoQ-1O Toner (we can’t keep this stuff on the shelves) hydrates and rebalances the skin with an hyaluronic acid and aloe vera-based essence, and is formulated with superhero antioxidant CoQ-10 and sage. Marie Veronique’s Treatment Mist is great for healing and soothing acne-prone, congested, and hyperpigmented skin without irritation or reactivity; her Aftershave Tonic is an excellent pick for rehydrating and soothing vulnerable, recently shaved, and sensitive skin, and restores balance by replacing essential trace minerals and maintaining proper pH levels. (Side note: Bryan is a big fan of Marie Veronique’s new men’s line.)
A daily cream should be a one-stop-shop for hydration and SPF protection. We love Ursa Major’s Force Field Daily Defense SPF 18—a lightweight, 3-in-1 formula that moisturizes, reduces signs of aging, and protects. It nourishes the skin with essential vitamins and minerals—like squalane and hyaluronic acid—while delaying the signs of aging, and provides broad-spectrum sun protection. Josh Rosebrook’s Nutrient Day Cream SPF 30 is a dual-action day cream that performs as a regenerating moisturizer and natural, broad-spectrum sunscreen, delivering a powerful combination of distinct herbal actives and plant oils to repair, moisturize, and protect the skin—plus, it’s recommended for all skin types including oily and acne-prone.
Ditch the icky Old Spice and opt for something clean and refreshing—Ursa Major’s Hoppin’ Fresh Deodorant is a cult favorite for both men and women at Vert. It’s aluminum-free, and eliminates underarm odor with kaolin and baking soda while absorbing excess moisture and soothing skin. The scent—crisp, cool peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary—is totally addictive, and keeps you fresh all day long.
