It’s almost October. Slowly but surely, our skincare rituals and systems of care will shift and adjust along with the upcoming change of season. Here in Colorado, we have plenty of sun and warm days to come before the air cools, which makes it the best time to prepare our defenses and create a buffer for the transition.
One thing we all have in common, at all ages, is the disruption the change of seasons can cause when it comes to our skin health and wellbeing. Temperature fluctuations, like the shift from summer to fall, can leave skin dry and confused. Skin conditions like acne or rosacea can flare as they reach for equilibrium. There’s always the temptation to overtreat and overcorrect (don’t do it!), which more often than not makes our skin angrier than ever.
Thankfully, simple tweaks to your routine can ease the shift of seasons and get skin happy, healthy, and winter-ready—no matter what age or stage you’re in.
Stay the Path
In the summer, our skin produces more sebum—you might find yourself using a lighter cleanser and moisturizer as a result.
Our skin likes consistency. If you have a daily summer ritual already—cleansing, toning, moisturizing, SPF, nightly treatment, for example—keep to it by simply switching out some of your products for more soothing and hydrating formulas. This will strengthen and protect your skin barrier and prevent reactivity to weather shifts, indoor heating, and those extra long, hot showers.
Remember, this is intuitive and totally based on your unique skin needs, which you know best. You might use a gentle cleanser that has worked well for all seasons, or be obsessed with an eye cream that you don’t want to part with. You might find you like to move to an oil instead of a night cream in the winter, too. Listen to yourself (and your skin)!

Plum Beauty Oil, Indie Lee’s Squalane Face Oil, or
Dr. Alkaitis’ Organic Ageless Facial Elixir; you could also pair your lighter hydrating cream with a hyaluronic acid punch from
Herbivore’s Cloud Jelly Pink Plumping Hydration Serum, or
Josh Rosebrook’s Hydration Boost Concentrate. Consider adding an additional layer of cushioning moisture after you apply any retinol treatments, in the form of
Maya Chia’s The Super Blend or Fitglow’s Cloud Ceramide Balm.
Age Specific Tips & Tricks
For younger and acne-prone skin, support your skin with additional moisture and try to abstain from harsh treatments that increase inflammation and dryness. If you’re using acids or retinol, make sure to layer a deeply nourishing oil or cream over it in the winter months.
Skin of all ages can benefit from vitamin C (think something like
And always, always, always—SPF for all, every season of the year.
To care for body skin, apply creams and body oils within a minute of coming out of the shower; look for ingredients like glycerin, ceramides and hyaluronic acid for extra cold-weather nurturing power. We especially love
